Political Career:
U.S. House of Representatives: Served as the Representative for New York’s 3rd congressional district from January 3, 2023, to December 1, 2023.
Expulsion: He was expelled from the House of Representatives on December 1, 2023. He was the sixth member of the House ever to be expelled and the first Republican.
Political Affiliation: Republican (2019–2024) and Independent (2024–present). He became the first openly LGBTQ Republican elected to Congress as a freshman.
Legal and Criminal Status:
Federal Convictions: Pleaded guilty to federal charges, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, in August 2024.
Sentence: He was sentenced to 87 months (over seven years) in prison in April 2025 and began serving his sentence in July 2025.
Commutation: On October 17, 2025, President Donald Trump commuted his sentence, leading to his immediate release from federal prison after serving less than three months.
